Theresienstadt. Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet. Kurt Gerron

Kassel Hauptbahnhof, 2012. Eight-channel
sound installation.
13 minutes. Commissioned
by Documenta (13).

Study for Strings

The thing that struck me initially about Kassel Hauptbahnhof was how large but quiet the station was. There used to be a lot of rail traffic here but it has since been relocated. If you walk out to the platforms’ end, there is a sense of separation from the hustle of everyday life and there is calm. The views from the platform to the surrounding mountains give you a strong sense of deep space and a tangible feeling of the distance from one place to the other. The eye is drawn along the lines of the tracks out into the surrounding landscape and beyond to where the eye can’t see. These elements combine to give you a space for projection and reflection.

Study for Strings was installed at the end of the platforms at Kassel Hauptbahnhof as part of Documenta (13). Kassel Hauptbahnhof was the site of three major transportations organised to deport Jewish families to ghettos and concentration camps in Riga, Majdanek and Theresienstadt. In 1941, the composer Pavel Haas was deported to Theresienstadt where he wrote and performed his Studie für Streichorchester. I recorded a viola and a cello player playing their parts of the composition but I asked them to play each note separately. The recordings were spread across eight channels. Expanding and extending the recordings into the space had the effect of abstracting the individual notes from the composition as a whole. The first section was reminiscent of industry or the sound of trains moving along the tracks. In the middle section, individual notes called across to each other and finally the pizzicato seemed like the cables above the tracks were being plucked by an invisible hand.

Theresienstadt. Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet

Towards the end of the propaganda film Theresienstadt. Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem Jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet there is a performance by the Terezín String Orchestra of Pavel Haas’ composition Study for String Orchestra. Haas is seen in the audience watching the performance and is also shown walking to the stage at the end to congratulate the conductor Karl Anˇcerl. Shortly after shooting the film, both Haas and the other cast members were sent to Auschwitz where they were murdered upon arrival. Although the scores for the composition were lost in the camp, the conductor and survivor Karl Anˇcerl managed to find and reassemble the orchestral parts after the war.
